Nólsoy - Vitin við heimsins enda
At the most southern point of Nólsoy, you will find ‘the lighthouse at the end of the world’ - or that is what Willam Heinesen wrote (faroese writer). From Tórshavn he saw the boats and ships sail towards the open sea and disappear behind the big lighthouse in Nólsoy.
The lighthouse, Nólsoyar Viti, was built in 1893. Back then, the lens was one of the largest in the world. It is 2.82 metres high and weighs about four tons. Both the lighthouse and the related houses are superior workmanship, stacked from carved rocks. The houses were built for three families. Borðan’s population totaled 10 children at its peak. Borðan alternated with Nólsoy village in having the school. No one lives in Borðan now - except for the many sheep, birds and a few hares.
