Skúvoy; Fagridalur – The Beautiful Valley

We move to the beautiful valley on the north side of the island of Skúvoy, where heroes have fought, and love has lived.

Way up north on the small island of Skúvoy in the Faroe Islands is the famous valley, called Fagridalur – The Beautiful Valley. Beautifully covered in its green cape it spreads over the north end of the island. Only one rock can be seen on the grassy slopes. A rock that has its own place in the history of the Faroe Islands. The rock is called Tróndarsteinur. It was there that one of the two mighty leaders of the Faroese people, Tróndur í Gøtu, sat and worked his magic, while fighting the other for the power over all the islands in the year 1,000 A.D.

About 100 m from Tróndarsteinur you can find the remains of a little bothy. A spring with delicious clean drinking water runs just outside the bothy. A young woman, named Rannvá, lived in the little bothy. She was sentenced to live in solitary for the rest of her life, for giving birth to her son out of wedlock. A story about love and sorrow, about happiness and hard work, about judgement and of justice.

If you would like to join us on this walk through history – and the fantastic scenery – on the island of Skúvoy, please join us every Thursday. The bus (route 101) leaves Tórshavn at 6.55 to Gamlarætt. The ferry, Teistin, then sails from Gamlarætt to Skopun at 7.20. The bus (route 600) then takes you from Skopun to Sandur at 8.00 o’clock, where the smal ferry Sildberin sails at 8.30 from Sandur to Skúvoy.

At around 9.00 in the morning we meet in the small coffeshop Hjá Ingu (the red house in the north end of the small village of Skúvoy). There everybody has a bottle of water (included in the price) and a short briefing of the walk. It is possible to buy something to bring with you on the walk (packed lunches must be ordered two days before the walk).

At around 9.30 we start walking. It is an easy route to walk and will take 2 -3 hours. When we get back, we’ll sit down and have a cup of coffe or tea (also included in the price). This is done in Inga’s coffe shop, where you of course can buy something to go with your coffee or tea.

At 14.50 the ferry Sildberin leaves the island of Skúvoy again. If you want to stay just a bit longer the ferry Sildberin sails again at 17.10
